  • Hello everyone, I bought a used BMW d model (e90) two years back. Got the regular service done that included oil + filer, air filter.

I have been considering a BMW oil burner for a while now - think I've narrowed the choice down to a d or d e46 touring, but keep.

I'm looking at buying a d in the next month or so. Budget around £k. Common problems: Turbo failure / Injector issues. It's a big one I.

I have been considering a BMW oil burner for a while now - think I've narrowed the choice down to a d or d e46 touring, but keep reading comments regarding blown turbos - I'm wondering how commonplace this actually is? BMW are renowned as one of the best engine manufacturers around, and I've never heard of anyone I know with a turbo diesel anything ever have a blown turbo, so why do these comments keep cropping up?

Is this a serious issue to consider, or is it really a very small possibility? Also, are certain models more prone to turbo failure? MattOz 3, posts months. Rick, The d is more prone to it, but in the grand scheme of things, neither car has more than their fair share.

Regular oil changes, oil separator changes and allowing the turbo to spool down will extend the life of the turbo. I've done about k miles in 5 d's of all ages and haven't managed to blow one up yet! Welshbeef 34, posts months. Hi MattOZ Just noticed the large number of d's you have had. Have you had all 3 power outputs? Did you keep them Std OR did you remap? Any problems of any kind with them? Finally - what is the MPG of each one you have had? Vee 2, posts months. We've also had 5 BMW diesels without turbo problems. What you have to remember is that BMW make more 2. Liam79 posts months. I have a bhp d and remapped to approx bhp and had no problems with mine. My mate also has the same and no probs with his either. Mine has 58k on and his has 78k. Interesting replies - thanks to all contributers. There seems to be an undercurrent of a connection though - I'll bet the majority of blown turbo cases have a higher proportion of engine BHP remaps?

None where in anywhere near the condition as i was hoping. Yeah another friend has the new d bhp model, not much difference between his and my remapped one. All the bhp's have the 5 spped box?

Yeah, all have 5 speed. Mine is the auto sport box. I'll have a look re rpm next time im out. Ranger 6 5, posts months. It's worth looking at www. Turbo failure was more common on the 2. Having said that I've had 3 cars with that engine without any turbo issues. One thing to look at is the 'swirl flap' issue on 2.

As has been said when you compare that to the number of cars on the road with those engines it must be a tiny percentage. Worth knowing about all the same, basically IMHO you're fine on both counts if buying one of these as or younger. I blew the turbo on my d after two weeks of ownership.

At seven years old my face lift 53plate touring with miles on the clock with a full history decided to fill the road with smoke and made a horrid metallic grinding noise. The d is more prone to it, but in the grand scheme of things, neither car has more than their fair share.
