    Ford Explorer - Specs, Data

Retrieve a quote Insurance enquiries The recent release of the model Ford Explorer marks the second generation Explorer to be sold in Australia. The latest Ford Explorer is an entirely new vehicle that features an all-new body, a longer wheelbase and independent front and rear suspension, and is available with either a V6 engine or a new V8 engine. The XLT is the entry level Explorer, although the extensive list of standard equipment might suggest otherwise.

Powered by a 4. Dealer charges and on road costs are on top of these prices. The Explorer XLT has a high level of standard equipment that helps to make the vehicle an attractive package in terms of passenger comfort and value for money.

Driver and passenger safety has also received a boost in the all-new Explorer XLT. Standard safety items include dual front air bags, four wheel ABS with electronic brake distribution, pyrotechnic front seat belt pretensioners and anti-submarining seats. Roadside assistance is also provided. The Explorer Limited model is the range topper in the Explorer line-up and is fitted with a new all-aluminium 4.

There is no manual transmission option for the V8 engine. Climate control air conditioning, leather trim, premium styled alloy wheels, side steps, body coloured bumpers and side air curtains are some of the additional features found on the Limited.

The new Ford Explorer is certainly a more modern and stylish looking vehicle than the previous model. While the external dimensions are largely unchanged, a longer wheelbase has improved both the approach and departure angles for off-road driving.

Inside the cabin of the Explorer there is a lot of plastic trim that tends to look a bit cheap. Some areas of detail finish need to be improved and detract from what is otherwise a reasonably well finished vehicle. There is an unobstructed view of the main instrumentation, although I found the LED Electronic Message Centre display difficult to read during the light of day.

The Explorer is a very comfortable and spacious vehicle. The driver and occupants enjoy good head and leg room in all seating positions even the third row seats where fitted.

Some additional side bolstering of seats is needed to improve lateral support. The Australian Explorer is fitted with unique suspension bushes, spring settings and sway bars and the new suspension package provides a noticeable improvement in ride quality over the outgoing model.

The new Explorer is quite a smooth and refined vehicle that is easy to drive and reasonably sure-footed.
